Threats and Dangers
For all the greatness and diversity and advancement of Talic, the city contains many dangers for the unwary and careless. The three daily dangers to a person’s well being are food, water, and shelter. The arid plain around Talic is not naturally able to support plant life. The combination of the punishing sun and lack of water makes natural growth near impossible. Some people have managed to farm small plots of land with backbreaking labor, extensive irrigation, and sun resistant plants. The plants aren’t particularly tasty, but editable and go to supply a portion of Talic’s food needs. Animal raising is impossible around Talic, there is just not enough plants to support livestock. There are a handful of animals that live underground that are farmed for food. The majority of the food consumed however is imported by House Terenor. Terenor agents hold a near monopoly on the import and sale of foodstuffs.
The second common danger is water, or lack thereof. As with food, water does not exist in above ground sources near Talic. The river Requiem is the closest freshwater source. The few underground water sources that are close to the surface are under constant watch of their respective owners. The average citizen has to always take water into consideration when going about their day. House Veren controls the import of water from the river Requiem with an iron fist. Every Talic citizen is given a ration tattoo for free water every day, a concession the Church of Alihan fought hard for. However the amount is rather meager, about 3 cups a day, which is less than half of what the average active person needs. Water can be bought from Veren vendors and it is basically a requirement if a person wants to survive more than a couple days. This way Veren gives a show of caring and pleases the church, but still insures a steady income. The wealthy buy larger ration tattoos that entitle them to larger amounts of water everyday for a one time large payment.
Finally, the twin suns are an ever present reminder of the harshness of life. The radiation from the suns causes sunburn in less than 20 minutes. Exposure to direct sunlight for more than a few hours can cause eye damage, first degree burns on the skin. Even longer exposure can literally kill a man in less than a day. This process is accelerated for the Firan and slowed for the Dras. Talic is mostly buildings next to and on top of buildings. There are plenty of open spaces though, such as training grounds, large thoroughfares, and gathering spaces, but shades are typically erected for use during the day.
